The two cooperatives will have joint sales of €5bn.
According to a statement, the deal will allow Sodiaal and 3A to join forces ‘ahead of a context of change in the dairy sector with the end of EU milk quotas around 2015’.
With 4.1 billion litres of milk handled each year, Sodiaal is the largest dairy business in France and the fifth largest in Europe. Its leading brands are Candia milks and Entremont cheeses. Sodiaal also has a 49% stake in Yoplait alongside US-based General Mills. 3A’s main activities are cheese – with a broad portfolio – and yogurt.
