Heineken has developed a new bottle made from ultra-resistant polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that can chill beer in sub-zero conditions without the consequence of freezing.
The content of the bottle cools to 0°C when the packaging concept is placed in a consumer’s freezer, but because of the resistance of the plastic is able to avoid freezing over completely. The innovation has the potential to revolutionise the way in which beer drinkers store and consume alcohol at home.
“The beer apparently takes 15 minutes to reach 0° Celsius from being refrigerated and up to 50 minutes when it starts the cooling process from room temperature,” writes packaging innovation blog PackHub.
The iconic star that has featured on previous incarnations of Heineken’s bottle has adopted a functional turn, as well: it turns red when the beer inside has reached the optimum temperature, notifying the drinker that it is ready to consume.
The company recently showcased its new GPS-enabled beer bottle, which guided people to the Heineken Experience Museum in Amsterdam.
