Heineken and Siemens collaborate to reduce emissions

Heineken has partnered with Siemens for its global Net Zero Production roadmap, aiming to reach net zero in Scopes one and two across all production sites by 2030. The companies aim to minimise energy consumption at over 15 Heineken beer and malt production sites located across Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe, with the inclusion of additional sites in the future. Heineken and Siemens teamed up for an initial project focused on consulting and advisory services. The companies simulated a typical Heineken brewery in the virtual world using an “energy digital twin” to identify ways to save energy. According to Heineken, the simulation showed that about 70% of energy use was tied to heating and cooling for brewing. By optimising and monitoring these systems, Siemens estimates it can achieve energy savings of 15-20% at each site, along with an average 50% reduction in CO2 emissions at each location. Dolf van den Brink, CEO and chairperson of the executive board for Heineken, said: “As we continue to focus on the delivery of our journey to reach net zero in Scope 1 and 2, we know that we must make many bold and ambitious moves to decarbonise our global operations". He added: "Undertaking these challenges with partners like Siemens allows us to bring in technical expertise and industry knowledge to innovate quickly and at scale. We are excited to continue on this journey with partners who are committed to pioneer and localise next-generation solutions, to help us reach our net zero goals.” By using operational data and energy digital twins at each site, Siemens will create a system to electrify heat and cooling production through renewable energy-powered heat pumps, reducing dependence on fossil fuel-generated steam. The system will be managed and optimised using Siemens Cooling Plant Optimisation algorithms, employing analytics to analyse plant data, cut energy costs and ensure operational efficiency. Matthias Rebellius, managing board member for Siemens and CEO of Smart Infrastructure, said: “We’re proud to be a partner to Heineken’s Net Zero Roadmap; an ambitious journey to reach net zero by 2040. Working with Heineken as a partner in this way demonstrates a thoroughly modern approach to data-driven decarbonisation. By collaborating on an end-to-end program, we’re able to combine hardware, software and analytics to predict and deliver the long-term results which are now crucial to every industry. As part of the long-term partnership agreement, Siemens will also deliver a five-year performance and monitoring contract, connecting the breweries to Siemens systems which use data services to remotely monitor the production sites.
