Gathr – the UK innovator in cricket flour snack bars – has launched two new flavours of its Crobar in smaller 30g sizes for a more convenient on-the-go snack.
The new bars have been made available to the trade with a recommended retail price of £1.79 per bar. The new flavour variants are coffee and vanilla, as well as raspberry and cacao, both of which will join the brand’s existing peanut and cacao flavours.
The delicate notes of coffee in the coffee and vanilla bar offer a more adult flavour and go perfectly with the subtle hints of vanilla, the brand said, while the zing of raspberries complements the warmth of the cacao in the new raspberry and cacao bar. All of the Crobar range contains real fruit and nuts, protein-rich cricket flour and no gluten, dairy, soy or added sugar or sweeteners.
Gathr founder Christine Spliid said: “We’re extremely excited to be growing our range of products and we’re really pleased with the new coffee and vanilla, and raspberry and cacao flavours. After the success of our launch last year we’ve seen a growing demand for smaller bars and more adult flavours, so that’s exactly what we have done with these new additions, which are an even more convenient snack. We can’t wait to share them with everyone.”
Insects are rapidly becoming a more viable and accepted source of nutrition in Western culture and have long been a staple of diets across the world. Brands such as Crobar, Jungle Bar and Grub have all sought to establish edible insects as a part of British diets by incorporating them into snack bars, while in the US a company has gone one hop further by developing a bolognese pasta sauce with crickets and mealworms.
Organic cricket flour is sourced for Crobar from crickets that have been fed a diet of organic nuts, seeds and fruits to give them a nutty flavour. The reason for using crickets is that they contain more protein and less fat than an equivalent amount of beef, plus are high in iron and vitamin B12. Crickets also produce far less CO2 than cows and more than 2,000 times less water pound-for-pound.
