UK-based craft brewer Bedlam has added to its range of beers by launching a new pale ale, available on draught from this month.
The Bedlam pale ale is the second kegged offering to be created by head brewer Fabio Israel and his team. The new beer will sit alongside Bedlam’s pilsner and four other cask offerings, taking inspiration from the new generation of American pale ales.
The beer offers subtlety, balance and refinement that comes from using hops grown in the UK’s cool climate. Using single filtration in the brewing process has resulted in a subtle and more refined pale ale, it said, though it was still recognisable in style and packed with flavour.
The mix of bramling cross, target and a new UK cascade hop – all grown locally in Herefordshire and Kent – contribute notes of lemon citrus, lychee and blackcurrant, with the cascade hop variety added late for aromas of orange and pine on the nose. The mix of maris otter pale ale malt and cara malts balance the brew, which has an ABV of 4.8%.
Fabio Israel, head brewer for Bedlam, said: “This is a sessionable pale ale that borrows inspiration from the US but uses all-British hops, resulting in a refined and more delicate beer – nonetheless, complex in flavour profile. In essence, it’s a pale ale for a more discerning drinker.
“Creating the beer was a natural progression from our Pilsner, which we launched last year. Feedback from our customers is that they wanted to see another kegged offering from us, something that equalled the pilsner in quality and flavour. We think we’ve delivered that.”
The beer relies on hops grown in the UK’s cool climate, the Sussex-based beer maker said.
Initially started as a hobby by a group of friends in 2012, Bedlam found commercial success locally in Sussex and has since started to expand.
Having increased production levels by 300% over the last 12 months – following deals with Metropolitan Pub Company, Indigo Leisure and Pigs Ears Beer Cellar – Bedlam became stocked in over 100 sites across London and the South-East.
The brewery has become known for its hand-crafted beer offering brewed by a skilled and passionate team, using locally sourced ingredients, and consistently featuring a fully matured flavour and premium quality.
