The average British meat-eater will consume over 2,700 sausages, almost 1,500 burgers and 3,285 rashers of bacon during their adult lifetime, according to new research.
The survey from UK sausage brand Debbie&Andrew’s also shows that the typical consumer will enjoy nearly 1,600 chicken legs, 1,000 meatballs and 1,500 steaks as an adult. This is in addition to over 1,500 cooked breakfasts, 4,680 roast dinners and a combined 1.4 tonnes of lamb, pork and beef mince.
The research of 2,000 meat eaters also found that 70% of consumers aim to eat meat at least once a day, with 60% saying they don’t envisage their love of meat lessening over their lifetime.
The figures provide an insight into Britons’ relationship with meat, but will pose a concern as demand for protein continues and the sustainability of the meat supply chain becomes tested. Experts expect that the industry will have to find new sources of protein, such as insects, in the coming decades.
Ian Bagnall from Debbie&Andrew’s said: “This survey provides a fascinating insight into how people still love to have a properly meaty meal.
“Britain has a tradition of producing fantastic meat so perhaps it’s no surprise that millions of us get so much enjoyment from it.
“In fact, around two-thirds of people polled said it is important to them where the meat they buy comes from – with 81% saying they typically buy British. Ahead of British Sausage Week it is great to know that sausages remain a firm favourite for British meat eaters.
“Also, as our sausages only use meat from British Red Tractor farms, we very much welcome the fact that people really care where their meat comes from.”
Among the other findings of the survey were that consumers will eat beef more than any other meat as part of their roast dinner – 962 times during their adult life – followed by 709 portions of pork and 593 portions of lamb.
Chicken drumsticks are enjoyed 1,295 times during an average consumer’s adult years, along with over 10,000 slices of processed meat and 1,100 gammon steaks.
