Construction of FrieslandCampina’s new 31,000-square-metre distribution centre in the Netherlands began this week.
The facility, located in Meppel in the north of the country, will be used for storage and transfer of FrieslandCampina dairy products intended for export markets and it will have room for 45,000 pallets.
Work was officially started by FrieslandCampina corporate director of real estate, Gerard Menting. Once completed, it is expected that the centre will provide 35 jobs.
The facility will store and transfer dairy products coming from the company’s production locations in Beilen and Meppel. These activities are presently spread over four warehouses in Hoogeveen, Heerenveen, Meppel and Veendam (all in the Netherlands).
FrieslandCampina will hire out the new building after completion of the construction.
Along with efficiency savings, the new site will save FrieslandCampina 1.5 million transport kilometres per year, which means a 648,000kg reduction in CO2 emissions, according to the company.
The new building will be certified by BREEAM as ‘very good’, which means it is built in a sustainable way using sustainable materials. BREEAM certification is globally the most commonly used sustainability certification for buildings.
