A UK brewery and industry experts Food Safety Assist has been chosen by a region food sourcing scheme to trial a new quality standard for the brewing industry.
Sussex-based Langham Brewery was one of four sites to pilot a new module that will allow small breweries and bottlers in the UK to follow a dedicated standard, which offers consumers and retailers that confidence that their beer is both safe and of excellent quality. The Salsa Plus Beer module was developed in response to the substantial growth in number of breweries operation in the UK, which has nearly tripled since 2000.
The other three brewers to take part in the round of trials for the Plus Beer scheme were Windsor Castle, West Berkshire Breweries and London craft brewer Meantime.
Langham Brewery worked with Food Safety Assist director Brian Humphreys, who helped to review the module prior to its release.
The brewery’s Lesley Foulkes said: “Brian was the perfect choice to guide us through the process, both because of his technical experience and his role within the development of the new Plus Beer module. Salsa Plus Beer has improved our business process and workflow and given us a greater confidence and pride in what we do. But more importantly, it gives our customers and potential customers a product which they can trust and whose quality they can promote with confidence.”
Salsa scheme manager Sally Ball added: “We’ve been aware for some time that this sector needed a dedicated standard and the results of the pilot are so positive. We hope other small breweries will take full advantage of the strong support structure offered by Salsa to see them through Salsa Plus Beer.”
