As Beijing prepares to mark the second anniversary of the Olympic Games, city authorities are reopening the National Aquatics Centre, otherwise known as the ‘Water Cube’, for public use.
Along with the so-called ‘Bird’s Nest Stadium’, the Water Cube is one of the iconic structures built for the 2008 Games and opens its doors to the public on 28 July. After 10 months of reconstruction, public use of the facility as a water park and swimming pool is expected to top up otherwise disappointing revenues from tourists.
The Water Cube bottled water, available only at the facility during the Olympic Games (due to the contract with main sponsor The Coca-Cola Company) is also set to reappear. Water Cube bottled water came from Canada’s Natural Glacial Waters, which also sells its Icefield Natural Glacial Water in China.
During the games, Water Cube bottled water appeared as one of many planned Water Cube branded products. At the launch in 2008, Kang Wei, president of the Beijing National Aquatics Centre Company, said: “The bottled water is the first ever product that uses the name of a modern landmark building in Beijing.”
