Stewart Island is the third largest island in New Zealand and lies 30km south of the South Island. When the islanders – population just 350 – were looking for a way to raise funds for the running costs of the community centre they had built, they hit upon the idea of bottling their most renewable asset.
With rain falling on the island for about 260 days a year, they began collecting and bottling the pure rainwater directly from the community centre roof.
Believing in the purity of the water, the islanders entered the water in the annual Putaruru Water Festival, where it received first prize in the boutique water category for two consecutive years.
