Challenge Dairy Products has introduced a new spreadable butter for consumers with an intolerance to lactose.
Its new lactose-free spreadable butter removes the milk solids and lactose through a clarification process, resulting in a clarified butter with the authentic flavour of Challenge’s dairy spreads. It is then blended with canola oil for a smooth, spreadable consistency. The California-based dairy producer has launched the product in 15oz tubs in the butter aisle of major American retailers such as Walmart and Meijer, averaging $4.49.
Challenge has claimed that the product will appeal to consumers who can not consumer lactose, citing statistics that suggest more than 10% of the global population has an intolerance to the dairy ingredient.
“At Challenge, we believe anyone who wants to enjoy butter should be able to,” said Tim Anderson, senior vice president of retail and food service for Challenge Dairy Products. “We set out to create a butter for the lactose intolerant equal in flavour and quality to our original butter and are pleased to introduce a lactose-free butter that anyone – lactose-intolerant or not – will enjoy.”
The company has also introduced two new flavour variants of its cream cheese spread range. Just a year after the launch of the line, Challenge has launched new strawberry cream and salsa cream varieties, which it said will “bring a little flair and heat to the cream cheese aisle”. They will both retail in 8oz tubs with a retail price of $2.49.
