Chilean brewer Compania Cervecerias Unidas (CCU) will invest $400m in the construction of a new plant in Colombia, according to local media.
Creating at least 1,000 jobs and expected to take around two years to complete, the investment will allow CCU to bolster its distribution operation for beer brands such as Heineken and Coors Light on Colombian territory.
The investment in the facility in Sesquilé, northeast of Bogotá, is the result of collaboration between CCU and Colombian soft drinks company Postobon to create Central Cervecera de Columbia (CCC). It represents $200m’s worth of cash injection over each of the two years of construction, with the joint venture having already invested $30m in the factory, Chile’s Diario Financiero reported.
Colombian news outlet Dinero added that the factory would have a capacity of 3m hectolitres per year and serve mainly local consumption, citing CCC president Mauricio Medina Yepes. In addition to Heineken brands, the brewery will be used to produce alcohol-free beer Buckler, Amstel Light and two brews from Irish beer maker Murphy’s.
“The construction of the plant should begin in the first quarter of 2016, or early in the second quarter, and we expect it to take about two years,” CCU CEO Patricio Jottar told Diario Financiero.
