Contamination with plastic is behind the massive recall by Mars Inc of products under its Snickers, Mars, Milky Way and Celebrations chocolate brands.
A small piece of red plastic was found in a Snicker’s bar purchased in Germany, but manufactured in the company’s Veghel plant in the Netherlands between December and 18 January. As a precaution, the company has put in place a wide scale recall of the products shipped from the plant to destinations in over 50 countries in Europe and Asia.
The company says that it believes this to be an isolated incidence, but is recalling products as a precaution. Consumers are urged to check whether their chocolate bar is manufactured in the Netherlands to determine whether it is subject to the recall.
A Mars Netherlands spokesperson said: “We cannot be sure that this plastic was only in that particular Snickers. We do not want any products on the market that may not meet our quality requirements, so we decided to take them all back.”
