Packaging manufacturer Crown has produced a new infographic to highlight potential future sensory innovations in the retail sector.
“80% of all purchase decision are made at the point of sale,” the company said, highlighting the continuing need for at-shelf solutions that appeal to the consumer and help to drive sales for retailers.
Crown suggested a number of key retail innovations – one for each of the five senses – including technologies that warm products inside the container or vibrate the package, and micro-speakers that could allow brands to create sound effects in response to a consumer’s interaction with the package.
The use of augmented reality to show what’s inside the package, mobile applications to educate consumers, and organic light emitting diodes that light up or change colour could all bring new visuals to packaging, the company added.
