Dairy UK director general Jim Begg said: “Dairy is a thriving business sector which plays an important role in the delivery of the national food supply. Government estimates put the value of annual turnover in the dairy sector at £8.1bn and milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy foods sell more than any other category in multiple retailers.
“We employ 80,000 people in the UK dairy sector and we are the third largest milk producer in the EU and the 9th largest in the world. Our products can be found in 98% of UK households.
“So the dairy industry is important to consumers, to the Government and to UK plc. It is in everybody’s interests that the British dairy industry thrives and grows.
“The long term prospects for our industry are good and dairy companies will seek to exploit this growth potential through ongoing improvements in efficiency, investment in rationalisation and consolidation, research and development and supply chain co-operation. Nevertheless, to ensure sustainability and success, the industry needs an effective partnership with Government.
“Action for Growth sets out where that partnership activity can best be focused and delivered. We look forward to discussing this analysis in detail with the administrations in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast and to developing further the successful partnership between Government and the dairy industry throughout the United Kingdom.”
Four versions of Action for Growth have been produced: one for the UK, one for Scotland, one for Northern Ireland and one for Wales.
