Deoleo has formed a strategic agreement with Greek cooperative Gargalianoi to launch a sustainable olive oil production model.
The seven-year partnership will see the Spanish olive oil processor and Gargalianoi work together to reinforce the traceability and quality of olive oil.
Deoleo said Gargalianoi is one of the main cooperatives of Messinia, one of the most important extra virgin olive oil producing areas in Greece. The firm encompasses 800 producers and is said to have the potential to double its production.
Pierluigi Tosato, Deoleo president, said: “This agreement is another step in our strategy of integration with production in order to create value for all the members of the chain. We know that it is a long-term project but fundamental to transform the sector.”
The alliance with Gargalianoi follows on from Deoleo’s deal with Spanish firm Viñaoliva to create a new brand of sustainable olive oils. Meanwhile, in June it partnered with Italian agricultural association Confagricoltura to increase the production of Italian olive oil.
Earlier this year, Deoleo unveiled updated packaging for its Bertolli brand in a move to boost brand awareness globally. Deoleo said it aims to target so-called informed foodies, those who love to cook and try new recipes, and to explore new cuisine and ingredients.
