Food manufacturers are being urged to contribute to a free database used by foodservice wholesalers ahead of changes to the way food information is displayed.
As part of new food information regulations from the European Union (Regulation EU No 1169/2011), manufacturers and caterers will be required by law to provide an increased range of information from 13 December 2014.
In order to help the industry prepare for the changes, Fairway Foodservice is calling on manufacturers to supply their product information to use in the Erudus One database, which is free of charge to producers.
The Erudus One database is used by more than 40 wholesalers, including all Fairway Foodservice members, Caterforce Group, Sterling Super Group and Hopwells, to provide product information to caterers.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to help all parties address the upcoming change in legislation,” said Chris Binge, chief executive of Fairway Foodservice. “The aim is to reduce the number of requests wholesalers and caterers will have to make once the changes in legislation are made. We’re not looking for any commercial information from manufacturers, simply data about the physical characteristics of their products, nutritional and allergen information. There is no commercial information needed, and it’s free for suppliers to enter their information into the database, which is a tried and tested data pool that has been in use for more than seven years.”
The Erudus One programme, a detailed product specification database, allows Fairway members and their customers to view a comprehensive range of information on more than 12,000 products from over 800 suppliers.
