The sale of Helados Nestlé includes an ice cream manufacturing facility in Lagos de Moreno, 100 miles northeast of Guadalajara; as well as distribution equipment, freezers and the exclusive long-term license to market and sell Nestlé’s ice cream brands in Mexico. They include Nestlé, Mega, PelaPop and eXtreme, creating retail opportunities for the Mexico City-based group in more than 40,000 locations across the country.
According to Grupo Herdez, the acquisition will enable it to increase its scale and capabilities in the frozen business segment and practically doubles the size of the ice cream category within the portfolio. Expected to be completed by the middle of this year, the transaction will be funded through existing credit and cash-on-hand.
Grupo Herdez CEO Héctor Hernández-Pons Torres said, “This acquisition will deliver significant synergies with our Nutrisa business and increase our sales and leadership position in the growing and high-potential ice cream category. We look forward to welcoming the Nestlé ice cream team and are excited about this unique opportunity to serve the youth segment, and strengthen our direct mom and pop retail channel in Mexico.”
