McCann said: “We are concerned to see today’s figures show the most deprived local authorities in England bear the brunt of alcohol-related harm. We know that people on low incomes are more likely to be susceptible to alcohol-related illnesses due to poorer health overall, so it’s important they get the support they need.”
McCann continued: “It is encouraging to see a decline in alcohol-related hospital admissions among under-18s and recorded alcohol-related crime. However, it is worrying to see an increase in alcohol-related admissions for both men and women. Adults are often unaware that regularly having a couple of drinks to unwind after a long day can put them at risk of health harms like liver disease and cancer.
“It’s important we change people’s attitudes and behaviour to alcohol and education plays a key role. While we can’t solve the UK’s drinking problems overnight, it is important to raise awareness of the risks of drinking to excess and provide tips and tools to help people cut down.”
