Friends of Glass has produced an infographic to map the food tastes of 30 European countries, after more than 29,000 people took part in an online survey.
The six-month quiz set out to explore various European taste preferences and how they are potentially affected by the cultural influence that citizens are surrounded by. Among the findings presented in the infographic are that Europeans love olive oil, more than 50% prefer to start their day with a cup of coffee, and six in ten European consumers look out for the freshest ingredients when shopping for food. The top three tastes in Europe were found to be bland, bitter and sweet.
European Glass Container Federation (FEVE) senior communications manager Michael Delle Selve said: “The European taste map was a great success. Glass is used as a packaging in so many products, so we wanted to discover whether there are distinctive national characteristics in people’s tastes for food and drink, which go beyond the usual stereotypes. We assembled a group of taste makers and sommeliers from several countries who helped us to devise a quiz that would identify key taste preferences, and interpret the results. Questions included ‘how do you start your day?’, ‘pick your pickle’ and ‘if you were a food, what would you be?’”
