At Anuga 2019, Will Schafer, vice president of marketing of Beyond Meat, spoke to FoodBev about the company’s meat alternative portfolio with a focus on its newest product Beyond Sausage.
Made from pea protein, fava beans and rice, Schafer described the Beyond Sausage as having the ‘juicy, delicious flavour and snap of a pork sausage’ but with about 40% less saturated fat.
The US plant-based food manufacturer rose to prominence with the release of the plant-based Beyond Burger, and has since drawn investment from major meat companies and prominent figures, as well as forming partnerships with restaurants, food delivery services and supermarkets, including KFC and McDonalds,
In November last year, the company announced its intention to go public with an IPO worth $100 million, as the company aimed to capitalise on the rapid growth of its plant-based meat alternative portfolio.
According to Schafer, Beyond Meat’s plant-based portfolio is driven by the need to address issues of human health, sustainability, climate change and animal welfare.
Schafer also added that Beyond Meat products are not only for the vegan and vegetarian consumers but for ‘everyday meat lovers’, and discussed the company’s future plans in dealing with the increased demand for alternative meats.
