An American craft whiskey retailer has released a limited batch of personalised Jack Daniel’s bottles in commemoration of Lemmy, the frontman of rock band Motörhead who died in December.
Atlantic City Bottle Company has released fewer than 300 bottles of the commemorative whiskey, produced using Jack Daniel’s personal colllection that allows consumers to add a personalised medallion with name and logo to an entire barrel of its whiskey.
The Motörhead XXXX whiskey was priced at $99 per bottle and invited consumers to “raise a glass and celebrate with Motörhead and their ol’ friend Jack”. The Tennessee-based distiller has previously described the whiskey inside as dark and oaky, with “some corn and sweetness and with that signature Jack smooth charcoal smoky finish”.
In spite of early media reports, the product was not an officially licensed Jack Daniel’s edition.
“Several media stories have mischaracterised the situation, implying this is a commemorative product released by Jack Daniel’s,” a company spokesperson wrote in a statement yesterday. “There is no partnership between Jack Daniel’s and this rock music band and we have no plans to release any commemorative bottles for any musicians in the future, however we are grateful for all the musicians around the globe who are friends of Jack.”
Lemmy – real name Ian Kilmister – was a well-known fan of Jack Daniel’s and Coke, and a petition to rename the popular combination after him has attracted more than 40,000 signatures. He died on 28 December from an aggressive form of cancer, two days after learning he had the disease.
In October, Jack Daniel’s announced an “ultra-premium whiskey” released to mark the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra’s birth, with 100 barrels being made available in individually numbered bottles.
