Japanese snack manufacturer Koikeya has unveiled a new steak sandwich flavour of potato chip.
Launching in the country this week, the new variety combines the savouriness of Wagyu beef – a coveted type of the meat that is known for its intramuscular fat marbling – with wasabi and soy sauce, and the additional flavour of soft bread.
Packaged in 65g bags, the new snack innovation delivers 336 calories, 391mg of sodium and 37.3g of carbohydrates in every serving. Its introduction extends Koikeya’s flavour portfolio, which already includes barbecue, garlic and rich consomme-flavoured chips, as well as a number of fruity varieties such as banana, tangerine and peach.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal about the launch of the company’s tangerine-flavoured potato chips in December 2014, Koikeya spokesperson Kazuya Obata said: “We were trying to come up with a product that is unique and surprising… We’ve asked some people to sample taste it, and everyone is sceptical at first. But all of them end up being surprised.”
Tokyo-based Koikeya is the second largest manufacturer of savoury snacks in Japan after Calbee.
