This approval from INMETRO provides verification that standards set by both Brazil and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are met along with NSF’s testing and certification requirements.
The NSF Bottled Water Certification Programme performs extensive product testing for over 160 chemicals, inorganic, radiological and microbiological contaminants. This extensive product testing, in addition to unannounced bottling facility audits, encompasses every aspect of the operation from water source to the filling room. The onsite audit verifies compliance with Codex Alimentarius guidelines for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and US FDA requirements relating to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
NSF Certification also requires plant audits and periodic retesting to verify ongoing compliance. If all of these requirements are met, certification is awarded.
Carlos Lancia, general manager of Ouro Fino (NSF Certified) and President of ABINAM, said: “ABINAM, the Brazilian Association of Mineral Waters, has long recognised NSF product certification as the gold standard within the bottled water industry. Gaining accreditation by INMETRO ensures Brazilian consumers are protected and can have confidence in brands that have achieved NSF bottled water certification. We expect many more brands of bottled water in Brazil will apply for this distinction.”
When selling products in a foreign market, manufacturers must be able to navigate that country’s regulatory requirements. INMETRO’s accreditation complements NSF’s existing global laboratory and product certification accreditations and gives further recognition to the integrity of NSF International’s certification programs.
