A new ice cream product that replaces the sugar and cream of conventional offerings with stevia leaf and virgin coconut oil has been launched by a major retailer, following more than £300,000’s worth of crowdfunding.
Oppo is available in three flavour varieties – Madagascan vanilla and baobab, salted caramel with Lucuma, and mint choc swirl with spirulina – and is stocked by retailers Waitrose and Ocado. It claims to combine indulgence with nutrition, containing zero added sugar and being naturally low in calories. It was started by two brothers who turned to eating coconuts and açaí berries while travelling in Brazil.
Charlie Thuillier, managing director of Oppo, said: “Creating Oppo took 25 months of research, three different factories, two specialised food research centres, and four grants from Santander, York University and the British government before we finally had a delicious healthy ice cream. Surpassing our initial target and raising over £300,000 is an incredible milestone in the Oppo journey.”
