Perrier has launched a sustainable innovation programme called the Next Packaging Movement – which aims to stimulate the development of sustainable packaging solutions – and will invest in three packaging startups.
Developed in partnership with SoScience, Perrier states that the Next Packaging Movement aims to extend efforts beyond the development of 100% recycled and recyclable packaging, supporting the creation of solutions that “reimagine packaging from sources to end-of-life, with the potential for delivering positive environmental and social impact.”
Through this programme, Perrier will invest in three startups: Biotic, Flexikeg and PlastiSkul. The startups were selected following an application process launched in April 2019, which evaluated key factors such as the breakthrough dimension of the proposed solutions, potential environmental and social benefits, and the ability to scale across the sparkling water market and the broader beverage industry.
Over 90 submissions were considered, and the three winning startups will receive technical, operational and financial support to help bring their solutions to market by 2025. A minimum of €100,000 will be allocated to each winner, up to €1 million in total.
Biotic produces a bio-based and biodegradable plastic from agricultural waste, while also providing jobs to women in Africa where the project is based.
Flexikeg, meanwhile, has developed a solution which can deliver water and other beverages in a re-usable flexible keg, with the aim to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.
Finally, PlastiSkul develops micro-factories for waste transformation, utilising an integrated-approach model mixing low and high tech solutions, from waste collection to transformation, that can be implemented in developing countries.
Philippe Gallard, international business unit director at Perrier, said: “Perrier has always been a brand that keeps pace with the times, evolving with its consumers and innovating while remaining true to its core values.
“This is why we are proud to invest in these three exciting ideas to accelerate their development. We hope that with the Next Packaging Movement by Perrier we can contribute to a more sustainable future, leading through bold actions and bringing to market innovative projects.”
