Butter and sugar sandwiches, mayonnaise on toasts and cold baked bean salads are among the strange food pairings that Brits deem “good enough to eat”, according to a new consumer survey.
Such concoctions as apples dipped in peanut butter and celery with a scoop of Nutella were kept out of the top ten by strange creations such as sausage and salad cream sandwiches, and Yorkshire puddings with sugar. The survey asked 2,000 British adults for their food confessions, finding that more than one third had a particular “weird” food favourite, with strange sandwich fillings drawing the most attention.
More than 10% of respondents admitted to dipping toast in their tea, with parents saying that their children had asked for weird inventions including chips dipped in Diet Coke and chicken nuggets dipped in milkshake.
The study was commissioned by Ripley’s Believe it or Not! in London to tie in with their Alice in Wonderland exhibition, which has a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party feature. The attraction has produced a new video, showing visitors’ reactions to some bizarre flavour suggestions.
Whether the findings suggest that Britons are becoming more adventurous with their food – as the researchers have claimed – or are just a nation of strange foodies is a matter that will divide opinions.
A spokeswoman for Ripley’s Believe it or Not! said: “Sometimes you can get a craving and not be able to put your finger on exactly what it is you want. There were many combinations in this survey that made us grimace but there were others that have the potential to be surprisingly tasty – we might even give it a try.
“Many people will have stumbled across the combination just by rummaging through the food cupboard and feeling experimental. Either way, we encourage people to be experimental and a little less ordinary – you might make an amazing creation.”
