Aminogen is a naturally derived plant enzyme ingredient that helps the body naturally liberate free-form amino acids from food protein. It enhances the body’s absorption process by breaking peptide bonds, which attach amino acids to protein molecules.
A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition says that supplementing the diet with whey protein concentrate in liquid form has become a popular choice for many athletes.
Researchers identified ‘due to possible inhibition of digestive enzymes from over-processing and rapid small intestine transit time, the average amount of liquid whey protein concentrate that is absorbed may be only 15g. The combined effect of these factors may contribute to incomplete digestion, thereby limiting the absorption rate of protein before it reaches the ceacum and is eliminated as waste.’ It was then theorised the patented blend of digestive proteases known as Aminogen could help by significantly increasing the in-vivo absorption rate of processed whey protein concentrate.
To test this hypothesis, scientists took two groups of healthy male subjects. During the first stage of the experiment, subjects were given 50g of whey protein concentrate following an overnight fast. Nine days later, the same group was given 50g of whey protein concentrate that also contained Aminogen. Blood and urine samples were then collected after each test. What they found was that Aminogen ‘increased the absorption rate of processed whey protein over normal levels, as measured by statistically significant increases in nitrogen balance within the muscle’.
Co-founder of The Protein Works, Nick Smith, said: “The benefits of Aminogen have long been known in the sports nutrition industry, but we are the first to add it to our single source protein without the premium price tag. While this obviously comes at an additional cost to us as a business, and is more complex in terms of manufacturing, we wanted to really differentiate our whey protein from the competition in 2014 and solidify our position as the UK’s most innovative sports nutrition brand.
“At the start of 2013, we did that with our premium grade whey and all natural flavours and colours. Now, at the start of 2014, we’re doing this with the addition of Aminogen. It will be interesting to see how the industry responds now we’ve made our standard whey protein less ‘standard’.”
