The retailer plans to increase its presence next year through at least 10 new ‘little Waitrose’ shops, resulting in up to 650 new roles.
Waitrose still plans to open a further four convenience shops by the end of this year’s programme too, including Sidcup, Monument, East Putney and another location to be confirmed, which will provide up to 200 positions.
More than 500 people applied for 50 jobs in just three days at its new Monument shop, which opens on 10 September, with the recruitment window closing early following the overwhelming response.
“In what is a challenging time for high streets, we are pleased to be in a position to bring forward plans for new investment, which ensures we can continue build our presence in and around London,” said Nigel Keen, director of development. “Although we are still relatively new to the convenience sector, our opening programme is gathering pace and we are building sales all the time.”
