Cawston Press has added two new flavour combinations to its range of sparkling drinks: gooseberry, and cucumber and mint.
The two new variants “take a wistful look to the past” and, at just 99 calories per can, make an ideal choice for consumers looking for a lighter drink. The cans contain less sugar than traditional soft drink alternatives because they are gently sweetened with some of Cawston Press’ crisp pressed apple juice and a sprinkling of sugar, the brand said.
Encapsulating a nostalgic taste of British summer, the gooseberry flavour has been described as “the first to market in the UK”. Cawston picks gooseberries mid-season for their sweet and tart flavours, and select varieties known for their deep blushed colour to create a delicious, naturally sweet drink. The new variant will remind consumers of “the forgotten charms of the gooseberry”, which it pointed out has been grown since the 13th century.
The cucumber and mint drink, meanwhile, uses real pressed cucumber as opposed to just cucumber flavouring. Cucumbers sourced for their great taste are picked, pressed and then gently blended with refreshing garden mint to create a clean and crisp beverage option.
Cawston Press’ range of sparkling drinks use only pressed juice and no concentrates, artificial sweeteners, preservatives or colourings. The fresh flavours build on existing variants such as cloudy apple, rhubarb, ginger beer and elderflower lemonade, the lattermost of which FoodBev reported on when it was introduced to market back in April 2015.
The range has seen year-on-year growth of almost 250%, with 5 million cans sold in 2015 – and, since its debut two years ago, has grown to constitute 25% of Cawston Press’ product mix across 12 different markets.
Cawston Press managing director Steve Kearns said: “We are excited to add two remarkably good flavours to our award-winning range of sparkling drinks. Our team has brought these innovative yet nostalgic flavours to market in Britain and I am sure that discerning customers will be delighted with the combination of high quality ingredients and novel flavours to quench their thirst.”
The new flavours will be available in 330ml cans with a recommended retail price of £0.99, plus six-count multipacks for £4.99.
