A new brand of candy, launched in Canada, that contains just 2g of sugar in every bag will seek to help consumers “kick the sugar”.
SmartSweets has rolled out online and will also appear on shelves in parts of British Columbia.
The Vancouver-based start-up, which began a year ago when founder Tara Bosch started making sweets in her kitchen, has received support from accelerator The Next Big Thing Foundation, which was founded by Hootsuite CEO Ryan Holmes and entrepreneur Meredith Powell.
SmartSweets CEO and founder Tara Bosch said: “It’s about kicking sugar but keeping candy and creating a movement based on smarter choices. I believe we should be able to enjoy our favourite foods while feeling good and treating our bodies right.”
And Holmes, who said he had been “waiting for a year” to taste SmartSweets’ products, described the candies as “delicious”.
The brand’s initial products are chewy gummy bears that boast 2g of sugar and the functional benefit of 24g of plant-based fibre in each 52g bag. Every ingredient used is non-GMO, always real and never artificial; the gummy bears are coloured with beta-carotene and carrot. They are available in sour and sweet versions and currently sold online through the company’s website in boxes of six and 12 with retail prices of CAD 29.99 ($23.28) and CAD 59.99 ($46.58) respectively.
