UK cheese manufacturer Norseland has added an ambient smoked cheese spread – intended for the travel and food-to-go sectors – to its Applewood brand.
The product, which will be available in individual 20g tubs beginning later this month, is described by the dairy company as “perfect for dipping, dunking and spreading onto crackers, crudités and biscuits”. The spread is ambient and is shelf-stable up to 25°C for up to four months.
Norseland said the product was ideal for airlines, cruise operators and other on-the-go foodservice providers.
Lisa Harrison, senior brand manager for Applewood, said: “We have been working really hard to create a product that tastes great, is suitable for vegetarians, is easy to consume on a plane and is also shelf-stable. It’s a fantastic tasting product and we have already had lots of interest for this shelf stable cheese.”
The spread is made from real cheese and has a smoky flavour, which tasted good even at altitude.
“Taste buds and sense of smell are the first things to go at 30,000 feet”, explained Russ Brown, director of in-flight dining and retail for American Airlines. “Flavour is a combination of both, and our perception of saltiness and sweetness drop when inside a pressurised cabin.”
The spread is just one of a number of new products being developed by Norseland to tap into the growing consumer demand for snacking products. It will be available from 9 July.
