This equates to an additional 2.5 billion cans shipped throughout Europe. Beverage cans are a popular format for a wide range of drinks. Last year, both key categories grew, with an increase of 6.5% for alcohol and beer cans (to 28.1 billion) and an increase of 3.5% for soft drinks cans (to 24.6 billion).
Performance in the eastern European markets was strong, with 10.6% growth on 2007, and in western Europe volumes were up by 3.4%. The UK remains the largest drinks can market, closely followed by Iberia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).
Commenting on the results, BCME chairman, Terry Cartwright, said: “Can shipments in 2008 were extremely encouraging throughout Europe. The economic crisis has had a clear effect on consumer consumption and purchasing habits, but we’re seeing that the can is a resilient product during times of recession, as consumers trend towards entertaining and consuming more at home.
“Cans are a popular package with fillers, retailers and consumers alike, offering convenience, distribution efficiency, outstanding product integrity, and excellent environmental credentials. In fact, the beverage can is the most recycled drinks pack in the world.”
