Bolthouse Farms has launched a new line of refrigerated yogurt-based spreads made from clean ingredients.
Maio will be available from next month and comes in three flavours: plain, garlic and chipotle. All three spreads feature the ‘creamy, rich texture’ that consumers seek in traditional mayonnaise, the Campbell’s-owned brand said, but with less fat and fewer calories.
Each of the different variants contains just 20kcal and 1g of fat per serving, as well as delivering on flavour.
The products were developed by C-Fresh Innovation, the arm of Campbell’s Soup Company that deals with leading new product development.
C-Fresh general manager Suzanne Ginestro said: “The popularity of traditional mayo has remained flat over recent years as consumers have steadily turned to alternative options, but they aren’t always satisfied with what they can find on shelf. People like mayonnaise for the rich flavour and creamy texture, but are hesitant to indulge because of the calorie and fat content. Our new line of Maio offers consumers a guiltless, better-for-you, creamy option without the sacrifice.”
The Maio spreads are non-GMO, gluten-free, and contain no artificial flavours or trans fat.
They will be available in 268 Safeway stores in northern California, packaged in 8oz bottles and sold alongside Bolthouse Farms’ existing range of dressings. The suggested retail price will be $2.99.
