Independent brewer BrewDog has launched a new gluten-free pale ale, after it won a contest of new product innovations.
The 4.5% ABV Vagabond beer won the company’s prototype challenge, which allows the public to choose a new beer to feature alongside its Headliner range, where it joins the existing Punk IPA, Dead Pony pale ale and Brixton Porter beers.
Made using centennial and amarillo hops for an “intense citrus bitterness”, the new beer defeated three gluten-containing alternatives to prove that “a lack of gluten does not equate to lack of flavour,” the Scottish company said.
BrewDog co-founder James Watt added: “BrewDog exists to make everyone as passionate about beer as we are – so we are always pushing the limits of brewing to expand the horizons of craft beer. Gluten-free products have become synonymous with underwhelming flavour and experience, so we wanted to prove that a gluten-free beer didn’t need to lack the bold taste and texture of a craft beer. With Vagabond, there is finally a gluten free craft beer that tastes like it should.
“We are showing zero tolerance to gluten intolerance and any intolerance of that is something we will simply not tolerate.”
