A UK-based brewery has launched three limited-edition beers, which will encourage consumers to go to the polls when the country votes in a referendum on its membership of the European Union (EU) next week.
Brits will decide whether to remain a part of the EU on Thursday 23 June.
Yorkshire’s Little Valley Brewery has released three beers that aim to ignite political conversation among undecided voters, and encourage them to take part in the referendum. All three are pale ales – the first, In, is fruity, hoppy and “strongly influenced by the continental attitude”; a second brew, called Out, is a light ale with a dry and bitter finish; while the final ale is IDK, a mellow and malty pale ale for the undecided, with a complex and thought-provoking finish.
The beers are available in cask and bottle formats through independent retailers and wholesalers in the UK. Halifax-based Little Valley Brewery said that they would target the UK’s undecided and disinterested electorate, with 10 million Brits thought to be still deciding on which campaign to vote for.
The company will encourage consumers to share their opinions through its social media channels, building up an “alternative opinion poll” based on which beer has proven the most popular.
Little Valley Brewery founder and co-owner Sue Cooper said: “We want to engage the nation with a debate that is monumental and what better way to do that than with a bit of quaffable political dialogue? The development of the beers was lengthy to ensure the palette reflected the values of each side of the debate and appeal to the masses no matter where they sit on the political spectrum. We know that everyone likes to think they are a political expert down the pub and these beers will help to spark that great debate.
“We know that a lot of people might not be planning to cast their vote in this debate, most probably because they simply don’t know enough about it. We want to get the country talking – it’s something we feel incredibly strongly about and will definitely be voting when the time comes.”
