A world champion distiller will launch a new small-batch, single estate gin that celebrates the efforts of the young female pilots involved in Britain’s effort during the Second World War.
Brought to market by a team led by the founder of The Spitfire Heritage Trust, the new spirit is said to be one of only three single estate gins distilled in the UK. A fusion of juniper, two types of orange, almonds and borage – to represent courage – alongside coriander, rosemary – for remembrance – star anise and rose petals, it presents a “wonderfully aromatic and refreshing drink”, according to the trust.
It has been developed by master distiller John Walters, who was awarded the best gin accolade at the San Francisco World Gin Awards in 2015, and pays tribute to the young women that made up the Air Transport Auxiliary – a civilian unit set up during the Second World War to help transport aircraft and service personnel between factories and air bases.
Ian Hewitt, co-founder of Spitfire Heritage gin, said: “The Spitfire is much more than a vintage aircraft. It is a Great British icon that symbolises the coming together of all the Nations of the Commonwealth in defence of our common human values and freedoms that transcend culture, religion and gender: our freedom to live and love and drink GIN with whomsoever we choose.”
It has already secured a first listing in the UK with Wine Rack.
Wine Rack’s head of retail operations, Haydn Hicks, said: “A fantastic product and a great story that sells itself within the British psyche – an iconic brand that I believe will set new precedents in the industry.”
