Four years after launching its Whisky Blender, Scottish distiller McWhiskersons of Bothwell has launched a new online blending tool – this time for rum.
The Rum Blender allows consumers to formulate a bespoke rum using seven different bases, titled buttered strumpet, fruit salad, caramel log, old spice, rum raisin, candy cane, plus smoke and a pancake. Each bespoke decanter is finished with custom branding; prices for each base vary from £0.45 to £1.02 per 10ml, meaning the price of a 700ml bottle starts at just over £31 and goes up to around £70.
Each decanter is sold with a wooden cork stopper and handwritten-style labels, dated on the day of bottling. Available through the Rum Blender website, the current delivery time for most of Europe is between two and four working days.
McWhiskersons worked with Front Page to create limited-edition rums for Rum Blender.
McWhiskersons teamed up with design agency Front Page to produce a series of limited-edition rums that illustrate what Rum Blender is all about. The two companies decided to represent the journey that each rum takes – from where it’s made to where it’s blended and bottled – in three simple, stylised illustrations. The first characterises a sun-soaked Caribbean island, the second shows narrow building fronts along the canals of Amsterdam, and the final one depicts Bothwell Castle in Scotland.
Of working with Front Page, McWhiskersons co-founder Andrew Nicolson said: “It all kicked off with a bunch of us sat around a table in the boardroom after-hours one night, learning a thing or two about rum; how it’s made, the different types, what Rum Blender is, and of course, a flight of seven different yummy rum samples to taste, enjoy and scribble tasting notes for. By the end of the session we had created three original blends to take forward and design custom engraved labels for… and a number of us were drunk.
“Fast-forward through seven months of lunch hours and early starts and we finally managed to sign off final creative to send away for engraving.
“I’m so incredibly proud of this work and can’t stress enough that the greatest part of it all was the opportunity to work so closely with other people oozing even more creative energy, passion, positivity and enthusiasm than I do. An incredible, balanced and extremely gratifying collaboration which rendered phenomenal results, not just in the form of three beautiful bottles of rum, but in the overwhelming sense of accomplishment, pride and satisfaction from all involved.”
