According to reports in the Indian media, an Indian-born businessman who made £2.6 billion from an energy drink has vowed to give 99% of his fortune to the poor.
Manoj Bhargava, CEO of Five-Hour Energy, made his fortune from energy shot drinks, mainly sold in American petrol stations.
He now plans to give away his money, much of it via his ‘Billions in Change’ charity movement, which aims to provide technological aid such as electricity generators to poor communities.
Bhargava said: “Service to others seems the only intelligent choice for the use of wealth. The other choices, especially personal consumption, seem either useless or harmful.”
Bhargava has signed the ‘Giving Pledge’, promising to give away 90% of his fortune – joining other billionaires such as Bill Gates.
