The university is believed to be the first in the UK to achieve carbon neutral vending status. Vend-Sense contains a motion sensor which helps cut costs by automatically switching off machines when no activity or movement.
It means that vending machines are shut down automatically during periods of inactivity such as overnight and weekends, when previously they would have been left running at both a financial and environmental cost.
Cordia’s Frank McCabe, GCU’s head of catering, said: “We’re already seeing the benefits of implementing Vend-Sense across all our machines. It really does provide a double return with the financial saving in energy costs made, coupled with the positive environmental impact in carbon emissions saved, which sits perfectly with the university’s ongoing Ecocampus programme.”
The device, manufactured in Clydebank, has now attracted interest from across Europe, the Far East, South Africa and Australia.
George McFadden, Automatic Retailing’s technical director, said: “We’re proud to have helped Glasgow Caledonian break new ground in achieving carbon neutral status for its vending operations. Vend-Sense has been a real success story, and with a patent pending and enquiries coming in from around the world that success only looks set to continue. It continues a rich and proud history of innovation in Scotland.”
