Guinness has announced that it will stop using fish bladder isinglass in its filtration process, in a bid to become vegan-friendly.
A spokesman for the brewer told London’s The Times newspaper that it will switch to a new filtration plant in the new year that negates the need for isinglass, which is derived from the bladders of fish and used to speed up the settling of yeast during the brewing process.
Isinglass is then filtered out of the beer, but traces of it remain in the final brew and consumers are not always aware of its presence as brewers are not required by law to declare its use on the bottle.
“Whilst isinglass is a very effective means of clarification, and has been used for many years, we expect to stop using it as the new filtration asset is introduced,” the spokesman confirmed to The Times. It is not yet clear which agent it will use to replace isinglass.
