At Health Ingredients Europe 2018, Rousselot’s product & business development manager Sara De Pelsmaeker spoke with FoodBev’s Alex Clere about the company’s Peptan IIm hydrolysed collagen ingredient.
Peptan IIm is a hydrolysed collagen type II matrix derived from natural sources, which helps promote healthy cartilage, enables easy joint movement and reduces the effects of inflammation with a low daily dosage.
The ingredient can be used in a wide range of applications such as beverages, protein bars or powder drinks as it is “very soluble” and versatile, as well as in tablets and capsules.
De Pelsmaeker said that the joint health benefits offered by the Peptan IIm ingredient can help active and ageing consumers in their day-to-day lives, allowing them to maintain physically active lifestyle.
“Peptan IIm is a type II collagen matrix, which means there are other components in the ingredient like glycosaminoglycans, which composes hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, and those two provide a lubricating and cushioning effect to help protect cartilage.
“On the other hand, we also have a high percentage of collagen type II inside, which helps in a preventative way to keep healthy cartilage and also works as an anti-inflammatory.
“When people are doing sports, the day after you can experience some soreness on your joints because your bones are basically bumping into each other during training, so this product can help reduce this.”
When asked how the preventative nature of the matrix can help aid healthy ageing, De Pelsmaeker said: “The imbalance of collagen production can start at 30/40, so taking supplements in a preventative way is very important to maintain healthy mobility and healthy skin.
“I know it is a little bit difficult for young people to understand that, but I think we must be aware that preventative supplements can really help with healthy ageing.”
