In recent years, the federal government has also been involved with the push to provide consumers with more transparency with what they eat in restaurants.
In 2011, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two proposed regulations that would ensure calorie labelling on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants, retail food establishments, and vending machines with 20 or more locations.
According to the FDA’s proposal, “To implement the menu labelling provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Affordable Care Act), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing requirements for providing certain nutrition information for standard menu items in certain chain restaurants and similar retail food establishments.”
