Synek, which launched one of the most lucrative Kickstarter campaigns of all time for its countertop beer dispenser, has revealed plans to return to crowdfunding for its new wine serving unit that “learns which wines you prefer”.
Described as a first of its kind, not only does Somm learn the user’s wine drinking habits and preference, it also orders personalised, sommelier-approved wines delivered directly to their door. Somm also auto-adjusts its temperature and aeration settings for each unique wine to produce the perfect pour every time. Its proprietary delivery system costs 70% less than bottles and never exposes wine to the elements, so wine virtually never goes bad with the Somm concept.
Each “sylo” – or carton of wine – contains the equivalent of three 750ml bottles of wine, is eco-friendly as it contains 80% less packaging material than standard wine bottles, and is easily interchangeable when the previous sylo has run out.
The company will launch a new campaign on Kickstarter today, as it seeks to replicate the success of its $650,000 crowdfunding effort for its countertop beer dispensing system. Synek will offer more than 30 sommelier-selected wines with the first wave of dispensers, to be distributed by November, and is initially seeking $100,000.
Synek founder Steve Young said: “We made a big splash on the beer side of things (and we continue to grow), but I think Somm could have an even larger and more immediate impact on wine. There hasn’t been significant innovation in this industry in decades and consumers are demanding it. We believe technology can make a positive impact without compromising the tradition of winemaking and consuming. We see it as the natural first step for those new to or overwhelmed by wine. Further, once sommeliers see the effectiveness of Somm, I think they’ll see it as the natural next step for the industry.”
