The fizzy tap water has been specially created by Thames Water’s professional water tasters, whose job it is to taste Thames’ tap water every day to ensure it’s the best in Britain.
The tasters have worked with a sparkling water specialist to create the best-tasting bubbly version of their award-winning tap water.
The introduction of sparkling tap water is part of the company’s London On Tap campaign to give people the choice of ordering free tap water when dining, as opposed to expensive bottled water with a high carbon footprint.
If the trial at Zilli Fish in Soho is successful, Thames Water hopes to make the sparkling tap water available to more diners across London and the Thames Valley.
Thames Water chief executive Martin Baggs said: “Not only do we provide the essential service for the capital, but more Londoners than ever are now choosing to order our top-quality tap water in the capital’s bars and restaurants. However, until now, diners who prefer to quaff sparkling water haven’t had the luxury of choosing between tap and bottled.
“Our water is 500 times cheaper than bottled water and is kinder to the environment, emitting 300 times less CO2 to process than bottled alternatives. Tap water is not only good for you, it’s good for London and kinder to the planet.”
Celebrity Chef Aldo Zilli has backed the London On Tap campaign for the past two years, offering free chilled tap water to diners in his restaurants in Thames Water’s tap water carafes.
He said: “People in and around London are lucky to have water on tap that’s up there with the best in the world and regularly beats expensive bottled water in blind taste tests. A bubbly version is a brilliant idea and we’re proud to be the first to give the public the chance to try it.”
The trial of free, unfiltered sparkling tap water will run in Aldo Zilli’s Zilli Fish restaurant for one month.
