An American start-up has developed a styrofoam sleeve for bottles and cans that can keep the contents chilled for hours outside of a refrigerator.
The Monster Cooler is “perfect for beach-goers, tailgaters, golfers, boaters, those relaxing poolside or replenishing during activities”. It incorporates triple air locking vacuum seals designed to keep cans, bottles and cups ice cold, while eliminating any condensation normally created by cooling beverages.
The project has generated almost $45,000 of crowdsourced funding through Kickstarter, after setting an initial funding target of $32,500, which it will put towards making four additional molds for the coolers’ manufacture.
It was the brainchild of Tom Beggins, who found himself with a 12-pack of cold beers and an unexpectedly broken refrigerator on a hot summer’s evening in Texas. Beggins used a styrofoam crab trap buoy to create a custom beer cooler that encapsulated insulation, and found that the beer was still cold when he woke in the morning.
The product has since secured listings in 17 outlets of US homeware store Bed Bath & Beyond in Florida and South Carolina.
Jeff Beggins, nephew of Tom Beggins and co-creator of the Monster Cooler, said: “Uncle Tom needed to improvise and find a solution that would keep his beer cold while his fridge was out. Little did he know that he was about to invent something millions of people want.
“After a few years of trial and error, we discovered the perfect closed-cell foam technology to keep beverages in cans and bottles cooler, for much longer.”
