VTT, Valio and the University of Helsinki have partnered to launch a new accelerator programme in Finland for start-ups in the agrifood industry.
The Helsinki-based accelerator programme will form part of the EIT Food Accelerator Network (FAN), complementing similar programmes in Munich, Haifa, Lausanne, Cambridge and Bilbao. The core aim of the EIT network is to provide a springboard for innovative agrifood businesses in the European market.
According to a statement from VTT, the programme will aim to help food industry start-ups reach the international market, as the combined expertise of the three organisations will ensure that all aspects of the sustainable food system are covered.
Applicants to the programme will be able to leverage VTT’s experience in plant-based protein and fibre; Valio’s product commercialisation and dairy expertise and the University of Helsinki’s research in the areas of nutrition and agriculture.
The application process for this programme will end on 10 March, and participants selected by a panel of experts will begin a four-month acceleration project next summer.
VTT’s co-creation manager Mirva Lampinen said: “In the new accelerator led by VTT, start-up teams will be mentored and coached by experienced professionals from food research, production and marketing.
“At the same time, these experts can familiarise themselves with the world of start-ups. We expect the accelerator to consolidate the network of food industry companies and contribute to the success of Finnish companies on the international market. At best, the accelerator will also attract foreign start-ups and investments to Finland.”
