An American juice company has sought to set a new healthy beverage trend by combining lemon and charcoal in its latest detoxifying drink.
Juice Supply’s charcoal lemonade utilises activated charcoal – a completely alkaline substance that holds a negative ionic charge – to counteract the positive ionic charge of toxins and poisons found in the body. The charcoal binds to the toxins, eliminating them through the digestive tract. The ingredient works topically as well, Juice Supply said, which is why people have used activated charcoal on insect bites and to brighten stained teeth.
The eye-catching ingredient is combined with lemon, which, despite having a reputation for being acidic, actually changes into an alkaline substance in the body. Disease cannot thrive in an alkaline environment, the Texas-based company claimed; in contrast, when we consume mostly acidic foods, the body develops an acidic environment that is the perfect habitat for foreign invaders.
Juice Supply has added electrolyte-balancing pink himalayan sea salt, pink peppercorns, fresh thyme, and a touch of healthy, unrefined coconut palm sugar – the dehydrated sap of palm trees – to sweeten the drink.
Charcoal lemonade can be enjoyed by itself as a means of absorbing nutrients from food; after a workout, with the salt working to rehydrate and the charcoal lowering lactic acid; and even to less the effects of a hangover. The company, which operates a “juice boutique” in Dallas, is hoping that the unusual proposition will help to create a new niche of functional beverages in the wake of the success of matcha-based drinks.
“Having potent detoxifying substances like activated charcoal in your wellness arsenal is of great benefit to your overall wellbeing,” a spokesperson for Juice Supply said, “not to mention it’s a lot more pleasant than many other popular cleansing agents. Completely tasteless and odourless, the only thing you’ll notice is the colour – but black drinks are the new green drinks, so no worries.”
