Thorntons will strengthen its position in the cake bites segment with the launch of a new line of chocolate-covered cornflake and fudge clusters.
The new Little Temptations line is packaged in 110g zip lock grab bags and available in milk chocolate and dark chocolate varieties. The product will “encourage consumers to give in to temptation by indulging in a new product,” the British confectioner said.
Thorntons is also keen to tap into the growing popularity of sharing bags, saying that zip lock packaging allows consumers to open and reseal the packaging. Data from Symphony IRI shows the cake bites segment has seen strong growth in the last year, with sales totalling more than £35m. Thorntons has a 40% share of the market, it said, and has seen a year-on-year sales increase of 25% since 2014.
Launching into major retailers this week, Little Temptations are being manufactured under license by Finsbury Food Group.
Finsbury Food brand manager Natalie Nairn said: “As market leader in the cake bites segment, we know what works well. We are excited to be launching the first cake bite into the market that is packaged in a fantastic re-sealable bag. Increasing numbers of consumers want treats that can be shared in and out of home and we believe the format of Little Temptations fits this perfectly.”
In June, Thorntons was acquired by Italian confectionery giant Ferrero in a deal worth £112m.
