Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) container manufacturer PET Engineering has completed a research project into the development of sustainable packaging options.
The Italy-based company’s Suspack project investigated the industrialisation of lightweight preforms with barrier materials and biopet – an environmentally friendlier form of the material – thanks to the contribution of €180,000 for the financing of industrial research and experimental development, and the cooperation of partners including Novapet.
PET Engineering said: “The reduction of the environmental impact was assessed by comparing the life cycle of the products developed with the existing ones: the [life cycle assessment] savings showed, depending on the size, between 10% and 30% in terms of kg CO2 eq.
“PET Engineering is thus consolidating its leadership in the development of preforms and ultra-light containers with both standard PET and recycled and bio materials; in support of this commitment the company has also purchased an injection molding machine that will allow to make preform protypes in house to support this process.”
In February, we reported that Swedish paperboard packaging manufacturer Iggesund had launched a crowdsourcing effort that challenged designers to “steer packaging development in a more sustainable direction”.
